Activity Description

This comprehensive literacy and math development Web site offers English, math, and job skills information presented in videos and downloadable worksheets. Under Math, the topics include numbers, calculation, percent and fractions, measuring, shapes, and graphs. There is audio assist and captioning on many of the videos.

This activity would be a follow-up to teaching about fractions and percentages. Students will practice changing fractions to percentages.

Preparation

  1. Preview the site, videos and worksheets so you understand how it works and can demonstrate it for your students.
  2. Print copies of Example Document (above) titled Fractions and Percentages. Can be used for whole class or for independent work.

How-To

  1. Pre-teach the topic, fractions and percentages.
  2. Discuss ways to learn about it.
  3. Demonstrate the Example Web Site (above) and the game.
  4. Hand out the worksheet, Fractions and Percentages Game (Example Document -above).
  5. Have students work independently or in pairs.

Teacher Tips

  • This is a resource of the BBC and uses British English. Preview to make sure your students can understand and be prepared to explain differences in spelling and/or vocabulary.
  • You may want to print transcripts (when available) for the videos and discuss any unfamiliar British use of words and what they mean.
