Project Money is a Web site and workbook developed with the help of adult basic education learners to help other adult learners understand money. It covers four topics:

• Saving Money
• Bank Accounts
• Credit Cards
• Income Tax

This activity will focus on learning about Credit Cards.

Preparation

• Review the Project Money Web site on Credit Cards.
• There are four related handouts and worksheets having to do with credit cards that you can download and print by going to the Teaching Tools link and then choosing Worksheets :
  • Credit Card Words (vocabulary)
  • Choosing Your Credit Card
  • Using Your Credit Card
  • Ten Warning Signs of Credit Trouble
• Decide if you will be conducting the lesson as a group or having a student work through the lesson in dependently. Tailor the lesson accordingly.
• If students will be accessing the site, be sure to test the site in your lab to be sure it is accessible to the students. Test any other sites you plan to use.

How-To

1. Begin by presenting and discussing the difference between credit cards and debit cards, described on the Web site.
2. Ask students for examples of when they might use each one.
3. Introduce the vocabulary list provided as a worksheet under Teaching Tools.
4. Divide students into three groups to read and report on the first three links on the Credit Cards page
   • Why Use a Credit Card
   • How Credit Cards Work
   • Choosing a Credit Card.
5. Next have the groups report to the whole group.
6. Review How Much Does Credit Cost and Understanding Your Credit Card Statement as a whole group.
7. You may also choose to have small groups read about the different aspects of credit reports.

Teacher Tips

• Credit cards, debit cards, and credit reports may not be relevant to all students, so you will need to determine the level of need and interest in your class.
• It is preferable to have a computer lab where students can get online and see the links and articles on the site, but you can also print the worksheets and just project the site from a teacher's computer, or use totally offline.

The Other Resources link on the Project Money Web site offers links to other sites that can be used to expand on financial topics. For example, Hands On Banking by Well Fargo provides information about bank accounts in English and Spanish, with audio for each page.
