Activity Description
Introduce your students to numerous health-related topics with these short, easy-to-understand, closed-captioned videos and accompanying readings/handouts.
Numerous videos and handouts are available, in multiple languages,, on the following topics: abuse, AIDS/HIV, asthma, cancer, children/infants, dental, diabetes, diseases/conditions, emergencies, food/nutrition, heart, housing, immunization, injuries and wounds, jobs, medical tests, medicines, mental health, patient safety, personal health issues, pregnancy/reproduction, refugee orientation, sexual health, smoking, staying healthy, substance abuse, symptoms, and tuberculosis. Not every topic is covered in every language though.
Preparation
- Familiarize yourself with the resources available on the site.
- Select an appropriate video.
- Print out the reading/handout that accompanies each video for each student.
- Identify terminology/vocabulary you may want to pre-teach your students.
- Develop and print comprehension questions for students to answer after the reading.
How-To
- Write the topic on the board.
- Ask students to Think-Pair-Share what they know about the topic in order to activate background knowledge.
- Write these responses on the board.
- Pre-teach the appropriate terminology/vocabulary from the video.
- Show the video.
- Lead a brief discussion about the video to check comprehension.
- Distribute the reading/handout and have students read silently.
- Have students answer the comprehension questions you developed.
- Review the answers as a class.
