Activities for ESL Students: Clothing Vocabulary Self-Study Quiz

Details

Main Website:

Activity Description

Use this clothing quiz as a review or warm-up activity when teaching clothing vocabulary. Or use one of the many other activities found at this site. (See the "More Ways" section below.)

Preparation

  1. Make sure that the site is not blocked at your school before using it with students.
  2. Go through the quiz yourself in order to anticipate questions or difficulties students may have. This particular quiz is using simple HTML, so it should work on all computers; however, many other quizzes on the Web site use JavaScript new window or Flash new window. If you use other quizzes, make sure that these are installed on all computers being used for the activity.

How-To

  1. Open the Example Web Site (above).
  2. Read each question to the class.
  3. Ask for volunteers or call on students to provide the answers.
  4. Select the answer down arrow to see the correct answer.
  5. As a follow up, try another, slightly more difficult clothing vocabulary quiz new window on the site.

Teacher Tips

  • You may want to pair or group students, show them the questions, and allot time to write the answers. Then call on the pairs or groups to answer the questions.
  • The activity could also be a spelling/team competition by having one student come to the board and write the answer. Points can be awarded to teams to have the correct answer spelled correctly.

More Ways

  • The quizzes on the Web site can simply be assigned as supplemental, out-of-class homework, or optional practice activities for students.
  • There are numerous other quizzes grouped by level in the categories of grammar, homonyms, idioms, phrasal verbs, slang, scrambled words, holidays, and trivia.
  • Quiz formats include true and false, multiple choice, fill in, and cloze. See also the main site, Activities for ESL Students new window, where there are bilingual quizzes, crossword puzzles, and podcasts. You can also use the links at the top of the site to get quizzes by level for grammar and vocabulary.
  • Topics of other quizzes include the following: conjuntions; contractions; countable & non-countable nouns; dialogs; plurals; prepositions; pronouns; question words; sentence structure; tag questions; irregular verbs; verbs; word choice; word forms; word order
