Activity Description

Dan Bach teaches math at Diablo Valley College. He has co-authored a pre-algebra text. This site has arithmetic (the basic operations and what order to do them), pre-algebra (introduction to symbols and expressions), and beginning algebra (simplifying, solving, and graphing.) It has samples to go with the definitions. Have students use the site to fill out the Example Document 1 Mathematics Basics. It gives an overview of the vocabulary and topics they will be studying.

How-To

Introduce mathematics vocabulary. Demonstrate the site. Hand out the Example Document 1, Mathematics Basics. Have students fill out the definitions for each of the topics. Later, gather the students to discuss what they learned and answer questions.
