Activity Description

In this activity, students are presented with a classroom lesson on solving factorable quadratic equations. In a computer lab or classroom, students then use the site to reinforce what they learned.

Preparation

1. Check that your school does not block the site.
2. Review the online activity by visiting the Example Web Site, above.
3. Teach any needed concepts to prepare your students for this lesson.
4. Prepare a homework assignment with additional practice problems, or use some free worksheets you can find on the Internet such as:.
   • Kuta Software worksheets (there are a few free worksheets here under Quadratic Functions)
   • Math Worksheets 4 Kids (scroll down the page past the advertising to find some)
   • The Teacher's Corner - Make your Own Quadratic Equation Worksheets

How-To

1. Introduce the lesson on Quadratic Equations and given a quadratic equation, ask students how they could find a solution. Explore different student ideas. Consider graphing the equation. Demonstrate how to solve different examples by factoring.
2. Have students view the presentation online and the steps needed to solve a factorable quadratic equation. Demonstrate how to solve different examples by factoring and then have the class try to solve some of the examples.
3. Walk around the room to assist students who may need additional instruction.
4. Place a link to the lesson on your class Web site or wiki, if you have one. Encourage students to review the lesson at home, if needed. You can also have the students do the Practice section in a computer lab
5. Assign your worksheet for homework.
6. Review homework on another day and identify gaps in understanding.

Teacher Tips

• Use the Algebra PowerPoint Interactive Activity or the Geometry PowerPoint Interactive Activity which are now iPad compatible (using just the browser, not an app) for a class game or for individual play. You will need to keep track manually of which questions on the Jeopardy game board have been asked and answered.
