Activity Description

This site is no longer free. There is a yearly fee for all accounts. I will hide it until we decide otherwise.

The online spelling program, Spelling City, is a free and easy way for you to provide online opportunities for students to learn how to spell words and hear their pronunciation in model sentences. The site helps students practice their spelling, especially word lists or vocabulary you provide them in class. Online exercises may be helpful away from class.

Preparation

  1. Make sure that the site is not blocked at your school.
  2. Practice using the site yourself before having students use it.
  3. Choose vocabulary words from an up-coming unit or lesson you want students to know, learn how to pronounce, and spell or use one of the pre-existing activities. See how-to videos external link opens new browser window or tab at Spelling City for more information on using the site.
  4. Print the Example Document 1, Spelling List, or send it to your students digitally.

How-To

  1. Assign ten spelling words.

Teacher Tips

  • Demonstrate to students how to use the site; providing written instructions is also helpful. No e-mail or registration is required by students.
  • For students to find your lists, they go to the site and select Find a List and type in your first and/or last name, username, or list title. You can also e-mail the URL for a list to students or link all your lists on a Web page.
  • When entering a list, words that belong to a word family (nouns that can also be adjectives, for example), you will be given the option of choosing which part of speech is intended. Also, some words may not yet have definitions or sentences. With an account, you can enter your own definitions and sentences.
  • Your lists will appear when you log in to the site under List Management. You can choose to publish (or not publish), edit, delete, or print a list.
  • Go to the Teaching Resources area to find the pre-existing activities and word lists.
  • Activities listed under Premium Activities are not available with a free account.
