Activity Description

In this activity, students practice vocabulary words in a game format using a SMARTboard. This is a fun way to reinforce vocabulary just before a vocabulary quiz.

Preparation

Before using this activity in class:

1. Watch SMART Survival Guide: Finding and Editing the Word Biz Flash File with information on how to set up your notebook. (See Teacher Tips below for more info.)
2. Open a Notebook file. Select the Gallery, which is the picture frame icon on the left.
3. Scroll down and Lesson Activity Toolkit 2.0. Select Activities then Word biz.
4. In the window below, select Interactive and Multimedia.
5. Double click on one of the Flash files.
6. Select Edit.
7. Be sure to select the number of questions needed.
8. Set up your Notebook file with your definitions on the left side and your vocabulary words on the right.
9. Make additional pages as needed. The Flash file only allows for eight words.

How-To

1. Present your lesson and go over vocabulary words and definitions.
2. Give students a copy of the words and definitions to study at home and tell students that they will be playing a game with the words on a certain day.
3. For the activity, divide students into several numbered groups.
4. Draw a number from a container and send that group to the Smartboard to play the activity.
5. When they are finished, write down their score. Let the group draw the next number.

Teacher Tips

• If you have a different interactive whiteboard, poke around in its software to see if they have a similar type of game activity. Many do.
