Activity Description

Missing site: In this activity students will read about their rights and responsibilities as tenants as well as the rights and responsibilities of the landlord. They will then read a sample lease and answer questions. The Web site, Mountain State Centers for Independent Living, offers low/medium level reading materials titled Skills Development Online. Topics include living independently, personal growth, your health, being financially independent, fire safety, etc.

Preparation

  1. Go over the information at the Example Web site (above).
  2. Print copies of Example Documents titled Rights and Responsibilities in Obtaining Housing and Reading a Lease.
  3. Print copies of the lease if you plan to hand it out to the students.

How-To

  1. Lead a discussion on renting housing and leases.
  2. Demonstrate how to get to the Example Web site.
  3. Hand out the printed worksheets, Rights and Responsibilities in Obtaining Housing and Reading a Lease.
  4. Have students work in pairs to fill in the worksheets.
  5. Gather students to discuss their answers.
  6. See "More Ways" (below) for a followup activity.
