Blendspace: How to Succeed in School Part 2 - Study Skills

Activity Description

Blendspace is a Web site offering teachers and students a place to gather resources, make assignments, and even create quizzes. For this activity, students learn about the importance of study skills, summarize what they learn, and demonstrate time management and goal setting.

Preparation

  1. Go to the Example Web Site (link above) and sign-up for a Blendspace account.
  2. Make sure that the site is not blocked at your school and that your browser has any necessary plug-ins to display all the site's features.
  3. Watch the videos on how to use Blendspace. They can be found on the Teacher Resources external link opens new browser window or tab page. Scroll to the bottom and start with the Getting Started with Blendspace external link opens new browser window or tab video. Then watch the other three videos on Ways to use Blendspace.
  4. Preview the different resources, but particularly the Gallery, looking for other resources to use.
  5. To use this activity, download and review the Example Document - How to Succeed in School Part 2 Study Skills.

How-To

  1. Discuss what a person needs to do to succeed in school.
  2. Watch the first video, Cost of NOT Teaching Soft Skills (Study Skills) as a class. Discuss the video.
  3. Hand out the Example Document - How to Succeed in School Part 2 Study Skills assignment sheet. Go over the assignment sheet together. Show them where they can access the other worksheets (Monthly Calendar, Weekly Schedule, Daily Organizer, and Goal-Setting Statement), at Blendspace (Example Web Site link, above)
  4. Continue sharing the three videos as a class and discuss them.
  5. Create examples of goal statements as a class.
  6. Pair students to do parts of the assignments together.
  7. Have students write their individual plans to improve their study skills.

Teacher Tips

  • Since the videos mainly come from YouTube, be sure it is not blocked at your school.
  • Go through the Gallery external link opens new browser window or tab of resources created by other teachers and use the search field to find resources to fit your needs.

More Ways

  • Assign students to create their own lessons gathering resources, adding an assignment and a quiz.
